What happened when the torpedo missed? Where did it go?

Assuming that the torpedo was running on a straight course, it will just continue to do so. If they were lucky enough to fire at overlapping targets, the miss might hit the farther ship. Otherwise, when it ran out of fuel or electrical power, it just sank. It sometimes exploded when it hit the bottom, depending on the ocean depth and the makeup of the bottom.
